France Threatens to Block Shein Over Child-Like Sex Dolls and Illegal Weapons

Shein’s big move into brick-and-mortar retail hit a major roadblock this week as the French government announced it may suspend access to the fashion giant’s online marketplace. The warning came after investigators found illegal firearms and sex dolls resembling children listed for sale on the site.

France’s Finance Ministry said a “large quantity” of illegal weapons were discovered just days after similar listings for banned sex dolls appeared.

“If the prohibited items remain, authorities may suspend the site in France,” the ministry stated.

Coincidentally, Shein celebrated the grand opening of its first permanent physical store in Paris on the same day, November 3rd. The launch at BHV Marais drew crowds and controversy. Protesters disrupted the event, waving signs accusing Shein of unethical practices.

“I am satisfied with this decision and I hope that, in the end, we will be able to stop selling illicit products on these marketplaces,” said Frédéric Merlin, CEO of SGM, which owns BHV.

Shein claims it banned all sex-doll products, removed its adult section, and launched an internal investigation.

Despite the backlash, the company remains open online in France and insists it’s working with authorities. But experts say this controversy could scare off investors as Shein eyes a possible IPO.

It’s unclear how long the weapons and dolls have been listed on the site.
