For Kehlani, the GRAMMYs this year is extra special. Not only is she nominated in three categories, but her daughter also received a nomination. Adeya’s vocal contribution to the song “Deep” from Kehlani’s CRASH album earned her a spot in the Best Progressive R&B Album category.

Kehlani, 29, also earned nominations for Best R&B Song and Best Melodic Rap Performance, but it was Adeya’s recognition that had the proud mom glowing on the carpet..

“It’s just been a really insane first month of this year,” Kehlani said on the red carpet. “It’s always nice to have people come together and celebrate each other. I’m just happy to be in a room full of incredible people. I’m happy that she’s here—she’s technically nominated today! Honestly, I’m just honored.”

When the interviewer pointed out that Adeya might be one of the youngest GRAMMY nominees ever, Kehlani smiled and confirmed, “Maybe! Yeah, she’s five, and she sang on my album, so yes. Nothing gets released without her approval and permission. It means everything to me.”

The evening was about more than just music for Kehlani, who also took a moment to reflect on the significance of the event taking place in Los Angeles amid recent LAWildfires.

“”Um, I really like the point everyone’s making of like, people in Los Angeles need this work today. You know, it could have been canceled, but all the incredible people that it takes to put this entire production together—these are the people that have actually lost everything. And I think it’s important that they were still given the opportunity to like, help put this whole entire thing together. We owe them everything.”

She continued, “And also, we live in a city that we—a lot of us—moved to, to make this dream happen. And so, we owe this city so much. It’s given us so, so, so much. And it’s beautiful to see community come together in a place where people often start the rumor that there is no community here. But there’s so much community and so much camaraderie in this industry, and I’m—I’m happy to see it.”
