Jax Ulbrich, son of Falcons defensive coordinator and former Jets coach Jeff Ulbrich, admitted he made the call and apologized, calling it a “tremendous mistake.” In a statement, Jax wrote, “Shedeur, what I did was completely inexcusable, embarrassing, and shameful. I’m so sorry I took away from your moment, it was selfish and childish.”
The Falcons confirmed Jax, 21, got Sanders’ number “off an open iPad while visiting his parents’ home and wrote the number down to later conduct a prank call.” The team emphasized that Jeff Ulbrich had no knowledge of the incident and learned about it afterward.
During the prank, Jax pretended to be Saints general manager Mickey Loomis, telling Sanders, “It’s been a long wait, man. We’re going to take you with our next pick, man, but you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer, man. Sorry about that.”
The Falcons denounced Jax’s actions, issuing a statement.
“The Atlanta Falcons do not condone this behavior and send our sincere apologies to Shedeur Sanders and his family.” They also said they are reviewing protocols to prevent future incidents.
Despite the prank, Sanders kept his cool. “It is what it is. Of course, it is childish…but everybody does childish things here and there,” he said.
