The campaign had the catchphrase “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans”, which received a slew of backlash as viewers interpreted it to be promoting eugenics.
In an interview with Vanity Fair ahead of her appearance at Toronto International Film Festival to promote Christy, Sweeney told Vanity Fair she has no intentions on answering questions about the advertisement.
“I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I’m not there to talk about jeans,” she told the publication.
“The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”
Shortly after the campaign’s release, American Eagle responded to the backlash with a post shared to Instagram.
“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans,” the statement read.
“Her jeans. Her story.”
The statement continued on to explain that the brand would “continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way.
“Great jeans look good on everyone.”
