Meryl Streep is my idol – the woman can simply do no wrong, in my eyes.

I’ve spent hours watching her acting masterpieces and The Devil Wears Prada is up there with one of my favourite films of hers.

This being so, you would think I’d be over the moon that a Devil Wears Prada 2 is on the horizon. But that’s not the case – I am actually dreading it.

Perhaps I’m just a major cynic, but I am a firm believer that a movie sequel is more often than not destined to be a flop, and the intensity of that flop will vary depending on the success of the original film.

If the OG film is a banger and anticipation for another is high, I’m convinced it will rarely, if ever, live up to the hype.

The Devil Wears Prada has been an iconic film for almost two decades and hype for the sequel is obviously through the roof, with fans (myself included) lapping up all the snaps coming out of the filming that is currently underway.

I’m frankly so nervous that all this hype will come crashing down in one big disappointment when the film is finally released – why meddle with perfection?

I am aware, however, this cynicism may be borne out of the fact that I was once very sorely disappointed by a sequel I was desperately excited for – in the form of another Meryl Streep classic.

When news a Mamma Mia sequel was coming out in 2018, I was over the moon and the film could not have come sooner.

But when it did and I sat down with some of my closest girlfriends to watch it, I was left defeated and have to this day vowed to never watch it again (I am aware this is indeed very dramatic, but I stand by it).

In the film’s defense, I have heard from other people who loved the sequel and perhaps my disappointment stemmed mainly from the fact Streep was absent from it, aside from a measly cameo – but I stand by my point.

It’s also not just the Mamma Mia sequel that’s been a disappointment. The sequel to the iconic noughties film Mean Girls was famously a flop and Cars 2 really didn’t need to be made.

And while they were decent movies, I’m convinced the sequels to The Incredibles, Toy Story, Before Sunrise and The Princess Diaries all pale in comparison to the original films (I’m now realising this list is outing my rather juvenile movie taste – please excuse).

I’m also not the only one who has been let down by a sequel experience. I spoke to a few members of the 9honey team who recalled their own sequel let-downs.

Speed 2 is probably the worst sequel of all time considering what a banger the original is,” one team member told me.

“The second Inbetweeners movie was rubbish and unnecessary, the original was class,” said another, who added that “Toy Story 4 wasn’t needed either after how godly [number] three was”.

One of the horror fans among us said while The Conjuring 1 “slapped” she didn’t love The Conjuring 2 and “the third should’ve never been made.”

See, it’s not just me! Yes, there are so many more sequels out there that I haven’t mentioned but surely you’re starting to see the pattern here.

It’s also not just The Devil Wears Prada 2 that I feel we should be wary of. It appears we’re in the midst of sequel-mania at the moment.

It has been confirmed a sequel to the beloved film Bend It Like Beckham is on its way and there have been whispers a Coyote Ugly remake is on the cards 25 years after the original was released.

Meanwhile, Freakier Friday, the sequel to the beloved 2003 film Freaky Friday, featuring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee-Curtis premiered in Los Angeles last week and Happy Gilmore 2 dropped on Netflix last week.

The response to all these sequels will either prove my theory of sequel-floppery right or will prove I have chosen a rather pointless hill to die on.

And when I consider the thoughts of some of my other co-workers, I realise I may be rather alone on this hill.

One team member professed “Madagascar 2 was way better than number one” and that the third High School Musical movie is the best of the franchise with “better songs and better acting”.

Meanwhile, a fellow High School Musical fan agreed the sequels are superior while another team member stressed that the Paddington sequels are “excellent”.

And hey, while I do worry that these sequels are on a fast train to flopsville, I wouldn’t mind to be proven wrong.

There’s nothing quite like a really good nostalgic film and maybe that’s exactly what these sequels will be (even though I’m doubtful).

Besides, in the case of The Devil Wears Prada 2, Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are all impeccable actors who I’m sure (and I honestly hope) will be able to deliver something just as iconic as the first – and prove my theory wrong.

And let’s be honest, everything Meryl touches turns to gold so I guess I really have nothing to worry about.

Despite all my lamenting, I will be going to see the movie as soon as it’s released so I’ll find out for myself soon enough.

That’s all.
