Back in the early ’90s, John Goodman and Roseanne Barr were fixtures on TV screens across the globe.

The pair starred as husband and wife on the TV show Roseanne, and while back in the day the pair had undeniable chemistry, Goodman now says that it’s unlikely they’ll ever speak again.

The show ran for nine seasons from 1988 to 1997, was picked up for a 10th season in 2018, and was then promptly cancelled before an 11th season could be made due to an online scandal.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Goodman shared that he and Barr “haven’t talked for about seven or eight years”.

“I’d rather doubt if she wants to talk to me,” he said.

Goodman recalled back when the show first started that the pair “hit it off from jump street”.

“She made me laugh, and I made her laugh, and wow, it was so much fun,” he said.

When the show was brought back for a 10th season, the pair reunited on screen as husband and wife, however it was short lived due to a slew of social media posts shared by Barr.

In several social media posts shared by Barr in May, 2018, the actress compared Valerie Jarret, a former advisor to Barack Obama, to an ape, and also falsely alleged that Chelsea Clinton was married to George Soros’ nephew, calling Soros “a nazi”.

The President of ABC Entertainment at the time, Channing Dugney, released a statement saying, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.”

He added that because of the posts on social media, the team at ABC had “decided to cancel her show”.

In an interview with Variety in June 2025, Barr acknowledged the Tweets however did not apologise.

“The way I feel about it is God told me to do what I did, and it was a nuclear bomb,” she said.

Following the abrupt cancellation of Roseanne, the network ordered a spinoff show titled The Conners which starred Goodman along with fellow Roseanne cast members, explaining Barr’s absence by having her character die of a drug overdose.

Goodman told The Hollywood Reporter that when the spinoff was picked up, he “didn’t know how long it would last”.

It ended up running for seven seasons from 2018, with Goodman saying her “sure enjoyed it” while it lasted.

The series finale ended with Goodman’s character sitting alone on the couch, saying “good night” directly to the camera, which he has now revealed was his idea.

“I wanted to do it, and they let me, and they kept it,” he said.

“I thought it was just us saying, ‘Good night, folks. Thank you’.”
