“We met in 1996 at the Deauville Film Festival… I think it was 1996!” Zeta-Jones told King in 2001 of how her relationship with her husband began.

“I had been told Michael Douglas wanted to meet me. I was a little nervous because I didn’t quite know what he wanted to meet me about,” she continued.

At the time, Douglas was doing press for A Perfect Murder and Zeta-Jones was doing press for The Mask of Zorro.

Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas, their friends who were married at the time, introduced the couple at a private dinner, where Douglas reportedly asked Zeta-Jones if he could sit next to her.

At the dinner, he famously told her he would be the father of her children, and he sent her flowers soon after to apologise for shocking her.

His statement, however, eventually rang true – but the duo first started off with a friendship.
