Crowd Snatches $300K After Bags Fall From Armored Truck in Chicago Suburb

A real-life cash grab went down in the Chicago suburbs this week after an armored truck accidentally dropped hundreds of thousands of dollars onto a busy street, and dozens of people wasted no time running off with the loot.

According to Oak Park Police, the wild scene unfolded around 5:07 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, when a Brinks Home Security truck was driving south on South Austin Boulevard. Somehow, the truck’s back door swung open, sending three bags stuffed with cash spilling onto the road.

When a Brinks employee returned to recover the money, it was already too late. Between 50 and 100 people had jumped into action, grabbing cash by the handful and fleeing on foot and in cars. The total loss is estimated at around $300,000.

Officials said no arrests have been made. Oak Park authorities are still investigating the incident and reviewing surveillance footage from the area.

Brinks has not yet released a statement on how the door malfunctioned. Meanwhile, police are asking anyone with information—or who may have picked up the cash—to come forward.
